What we do
NB Roofs installs solar attic fans and checks attic ventilation as a roofing contractor, so each vent is planned, cut, flashed and sealed as part of the roof. NB Roofs serves homeowners in The Villages, FL, Leesburg and nearby Central Florida communities.

A solar attic fan has a small solar panel that powers an exhaust fan, pulling hot, damp air out of the attic while intake vents let fresh air in. NB Roofs marks the best locations, cuts each opening, and installs flashing around every vent to keep water out.

Before installing any vent, NB Roofs inspects the attic and roof: the current intake and exhaust vents, signs of heat or moisture problems, and the attic's size. That tells NB Roofs how many vents a home needs and where they should go.

Solar vents need little upkeep, but a yearly check keeps them working. NB Roofs can clean the solar panels, check that each fan runs, and make sure the seals and flashing around every vent are tight.

How it works
A solar attic fan uses a small solar panel to power an exhaust fan mounted in the roof. The fan pulls hot, damp air out of the attic, and fresh air comes in through intake vents, usually at the soffits. It runs on sunlight alone, so it works hardest on bright, hot days when attic heat builds up.
A solar panel on the vent turns sunlight into power for the fan. It does not connect to the home's electrical system.
The fan draws hot, damp air up and out of the attic through the vent opening in the roof.
Intake vents, usually at the soffits, let outside air replace the air the fan pulls out. Without enough intake, a fan cannot move air well.
Ridge, soffit and gable vents all affect airflow, so the assessment checks how a solar fan fits with the vents you already have.
Warning signs
Common signs of poor attic ventilation include rooms under the attic that stay warmer than the rest of the house, energy bills that seem high for no clear reason, a hot and stuffy attic, and moisture, condensation or mildew in the attic. An attic and roof assessment shows whether better ventilation would help.

Our process
A solar attic fan installation with NB Roofs follows six steps, from the attic and roof assessment to testing each fan.
NB Roofs checks the current ventilation, looks for heat and moisture problems, and measures the attic.
NB Roofs works out how many vents the attic needs and where they should go for airflow and sun.
Each vent location is marked, and the roof openings are cut cleanly to size.
Flashing goes in around every vent and is sealed to the roof covering to keep water out.
Each panel is positioned for good sun exposure through the day.
Every fan is tested to make sure it runs, and the crew cleans up the site.
Built for Central Florida
Central Florida's long, hot summers and high humidity load an attic with heat and moisture. Good attic ventilation moves that hot, damp air out and lets fresh air in through intake vents. For homes in The Villages and Leesburg, a solar attic fan adds exhaust airflow without connecting to the home's electrical system.
Strong sun heats the roof and the attic under it. Without enough ventilation, that heat stays in the attic and works its way into the rooms below.
Humid air that gets trapped in the attic can lead to condensation, musty smells and mildew. Moving air helps carry that moisture out.
The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, according to the National Hurricane Center. Every vent is an opening in the roof, so correct flashing and sealing matter, and vents are worth checking after a major storm.

Questions
Solar attic fans run on sunlight, so they run hardest on the sunny afternoons when Florida attics are hottest. How well one works depends on the attic's size, the fan's capacity, and having enough intake vents, usually at the soffits, so fresh air can replace the hot air being pulled out.
Whether a solar attic fan is worth it depends on how hot your attic gets, how well it is ventilated now, and the fan you choose. A solar attic fan does not use electricity from the home. NB Roofs checks your attic and current vents first and tells you whether a fan makes sense for your home.
The number of solar attic fans a home needs depends on the attic's size, the fan's rated airflow, the roof layout and how much intake ventilation the attic already has. NB Roofs measures the attic and checks the existing vents during the assessment, then recommends how many fans to install and where.
A solar attic fan needs an opening cut in the roof, so it has to be flashed and sealed correctly to keep water out. NB Roofs installs flashing around each vent and seals it to the roof covering. It is also worth having roof vents checked after a major storm.
Solar attic fans need little maintenance because they do not connect to the home's electrical system. A yearly check is still a good idea: clean the solar panel, make sure the fan runs, and check the seals and flashing around the vent.
